Malaysian Drivers
It’s been 450 days since I’ve been back to Malaysia permanently…and yes, it has been such a learning curve. Some might think I’m being synical when I say it’s difficult trying to acclimatise myself to the Malaysian culture… but try putting themselves in my shoes and then tell me if it’s easy! I thought coming back to Malaysia would mean I’d be living a more laid-back life…but it seems it’s the opposite… it’s more hectic than my previous life in the UK.
I have to say that I’ve settled down back to Malaysia quite nicely…I speak more Malay now without thinking it sounds weird…I eat more Malaysian food now without thinking I’d grow fat (which I am gradually am)…I drive a Malaysian built car now (not Malaysian brand) without thinking the car would stall anytime soon…I am close to the family now which is heaven for me…but I still can’t get over the Malaysian mentality when they drive on Malaysian roads! Urgghhh. The Europeans are far better at driving… strange but true!
I’ve been wanting to write about this for so long…but I thought I’d give my fellow Malaysians the benefit of the doubt, they might change! Hahahahah I was SOOOOOOOOOOO wrong! Here are the following 5 main problems with Malaysian drivers which may or may not touch a nerve or two…Sorry guys… TOUGH! But it is happening as we speak. So to those of you who still make those mistakes…PUHLEAASSSSEEEEE Change for the better!
1. Most Malaysian drivers DO NOT indicate when moving from one lane to another or even when they’re going into a junction. Are they aware of the indicators which car manufacturers have provided for them to use to warn others when they move lanes or going into a junction? If this is the case, the car manufacturers might as well take the indicators off the cars and make the car less pricey! Don’t you think? I have to give them credit that these SOBs do indicate, but ONLY when they run out tarmac to squeeze in to the next lane… typical! Indicating doesn’t take much effort, it’s just a flick of a finger…which probably takes less than 5 calories to do.
2. Most Malaysian drivers who drive underpowered cars DO NOT drive on the slow lane. Do they think with all those body kits on their car it will make the car go faster? What drives me nuts is when there’s absolutely NO vehicle on the slower lane and they’re sticking to the right most lane! Most roads are built with a minimum of 2 lanes…and they are there for a reason. Do you think by sticking to the middle lane or the most right lane, you won’t have problems overtaking others? Which brings me to my previous comment on why these SOBs do not indicate. If they were in the slow lane and wanting to overtake, all they need to do is to indicate and wait for some space, and accelerate to ovetake. That’s not that difficult to do is it? If you analyse it carefully, slow cars on right most lane is the main reason for slow traffic and traffic jams! If Malaysian drivers understand the concept of moving to the left when they’re slow or not overtaking…the road traffic will be much smoother…. Trust me!
3. Most Malaysian drivers love to assume. They assume that other drivers will give way to them if they come out of a junction… especially when they do not indicate and warn others of their intentions. They also assume that others will stop for them when they’ve nudged the car forward at a junction, and they will also assume that other cars are as slow as theirs. What the F***? Stop assuming and be a bit more considerate towards other drivers!
4. Most Malaysian drivers DO NOT know how to judge an incoming car. When they’re driving behind a slower car and have to overtake them, they will normally do the usual checking of incoming cars from the sides and the rear using their mirrors…and if they see a car coming on the right lane, they’d try to judge whether the car is fast or too close in order to overtake… and most of the time, they misjudge! Majority of the time, you’d see cars having to press on their brakes with loud screeches just because they have to immediately slow down because those pricks made a wrong decision and try to overtake despite the fact that the incoming car from the right lane is going fast. GOD… what are they thinking??? This is the reason why accidents happen…
5. Most Malaysian drivers DO NOT understand the concept of safety. There are lots of drivers out there who do think all cars are built for driving fast. Little do they know that those race cars are normally heavily modified to ensure safety. Better brakes, better suspensions, and better trained drivers too! But what you can see right now is standard cars driving like mad – Wiras, Kancils, Kenaris, Myvis etc. I have nothing against driving fast coz I do too, but you’ll need to evaluate the surroundings and the vehicle you’re driving in order to do that. You’ll need to understand the limitations of a car. Most accidents happen because the drivers are not used to the vehicle they drive but decide to push it to its limits and sometimes more than its limits. You’ll see in the front page of a local newspaper of young teenagers who die in a car accidents because of these factors. You don’t go driving fast in a small village near a school, would you? Do they think by using their “Driving Lights” (Front Spotlights) in the evenings would increase the safety… well they’re thinking wrong… it creates inconveniences for the others… it blinds you dude!
The thing is, all us Malaysians need to do is to be a bit more considerate, act accordingly and just be aware of the surroundings. I still have faith in my fellow Malaysians but just need them to understand that there are other drivers on the roads…and not just them! If you have other items to be added to the list, let me know and I’ll do so! heheheheh
Peace!
